MJ turns ONE

For my son's first birthday I choose a Sock Monkey theme. I designed his smash cake to match the invitation we sent out, a sock monkey on the top and argyle on the side in red, blue and brown.

Love this color scheme!

Not so sure about frosting....or cake.

For the cupcakes:
Mini Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting
Regular size Banana Cupcakes with Vanilla and Nutella Swirl Buttercream
Topped with handmade marshmallow fondant Sock Monkey's

Guess How Much I Love You

This is probably one of my favorite cakes I've made so far.

The theme was from the children's book "Guess How Much I Love You".

I actually painted this cake!
It's all hand painted.
I used the gel colors, water and paint brushes.
Lucky for me, my son has this book so I was able to use it to find a good scene to paint and use lines from the book to quote around the sides.

Pig Cupcakes

Birthday Pig Cupcakes
These are Fresh Strawberry cupcake with a Strawberry Buttercream frosting adorned with marshmallow fondant for the snouts and ears.
So cute!

93rd Birthday

This is a 2-layered half sheet cake, half Chocolate and half White filled with Raspberry Jam filling and covered in one of my favorites White Chocolate Raspberry Buttercream.

I swear it weighed 15 pounds! This was one heavy but wonderfully smelling cake :)
To celebrate a friends grandma turning 93 years young.

It made me realize I desperately need to work on my hand writing skills for cakes, another reason why I love using fondant for letter.

Greg and Anna's Wedding

Another wedding in the books!

Our friends Greg and Anna finally tied the knot!! The wedding was over St. Patrick's Day weekend. It was an absolutely beautiful wedding ceremony and very fun reception, photo booth and great DJ included ;)

The bride and groom had a yummy dessert table with delicious cake pops from Urban Sugar located out of Des Moines, IA in an assortment of flavors, along with cream cheese mints.

They wanted their own small cake to cut for the cake cutting. Their colors were dark grey and true red with damask print on their invitations. So for their cake Anna requested a dark grey fondant covered cake with red damask print.

Two of the bride and grooms close friends also had their birthday's on their big day so they wanted to do something special for them. They requested their own birthday cakes to help celebrate their birthday! Isn't that so cute?!

Under the Sea

"The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?

Under the sea
Under the sea
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we devotin'
Full time to floatin'
Under the sea"

I just love "The Little Mermaid". When I think of an Under the Sea party this song pops in my head and plays over and over.

I had the pleasure of making little Miss Gracyn's birthday cake again this year. Her favorite Disney princess is Ariel! So for her birthday this year she had an Under the Sea birthday party theme and her mother requested the most perfect cake for her...

An aqua blue ombre ruffle cake!

It was my first time making BOTH fondant ruffles and using the ombre effect. I watched a couple tutorials on YouTube for tips then tried it out on my own. I love how it turned out.

Up close ruffles, my favorite picture :)

The cake is made from a 4-inch round top tier and a 6-inch round bottom tier. Both tiers are chocolate cake with white chocolate buttercream covered in marshmallow fondant. In order to get the ruffles to stick up and not break, I mixed equal parts fondant with pre-made white gumpaste purchased from my local craft store.

I love looking at this cake!

Minecraft

I have to admit, I had no idea what Minecraft was or that it even existed when I was asked if it would be possible for me to make a Minecraft themed cake.
Apparently all the cool, young kids are playing it...which mean I'm no longer cool nor young.
If you're like me and don't know what it is either, all I can tell you is that it's a game you can build different levels in....actually I'm still not very sure what you do in it!
It looks like this

I was asked for something that was just simple but that you could tell was from the game. Since the game is very pixelated (is that even a word?) I decided to use different color squares.

I started off making 1-inch squared but they were too big to give the affect I wanted so I cut each 1-inch square into fourths. It worked out perfect!

Baseball Cake

**I have some catching up to do. I am very behind on keeping this blog up to date and hope to get back on it!

I love making first birthday cakes. Sports themed cakes have been very popular for little boys birthdays since I've been making cakes.

I made this baseball glove out of a double layer 9-inch round cake. The baseball on top of the large cake was made from a small ramekin.

With a round baseball smash cake.

Sports Cake

I love when clients come back! I was lucky enough to make Charlie's first birthday cake, an Iowa Hawkeye theme found here. This year he had a sports ball theme, including basketball, soccer, football, and baseballs. I included all four into one cake!
